{"id":11024,"date":"2026-06-17T08:05:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T12:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vanessaboglio.com\/?p=11024"},"modified":"2026-06-17T08:06:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T12:06:31","slug":"boreout-syndrome-when-doing-too-little-at-work-wears-you-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vanessaboglio.com\/en\/boreout-syndrome-when-doing-too-little-at-work-wears-you-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Boreout Syndrome: When Doing Too Little at Work Wears You Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most conversations about the workplace result in employees being burnt-out due to excessive tasks, assuming many roles at the same time, lack of recognition and resources among other factors.\u00a0 There\u2019s a less-discussed condition that comes from the opposite direction called boreout and it can be just as exhausting and as damaging to mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Boreout syndrome<\/strong> is<mark class=\"has-inline-color has-theme-palette-7-color\"> <mark>a state of chronic workplace boredom, disengagement, and under-stimulation<\/mark>.\u00a0 U<\/mark>nlike burnout (caused by too much pressure), boreout happens when tasks are meaningless, monotonous, or too easy.\u00a0 It can severely impact your mental health, leading to apathy, fatigue, and even physical symptoms like headaches.\u00a0 Boreout causes a sense that your job no longer has a meaning or challenges you.\u00a0 It is described as a sustained pattern, weeks or months feeling chronically underused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boreout vs. Burnout<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While both states leave employees feeling drained, their root causes and characteristics differ:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>Feature<\/td><td>Boreout<\/td><td>Burnout<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Core Cause<\/td><td>Too little challenge or meaning<\/td><td>Too much pressure and workload<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Pace<\/td><td>Slow, monotonous, and uninspired<\/td><td>Fast-paced, intense, and overwhelming<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Workload Level<\/td><td>Under-stimulated, lacking tasks<\/td><td>Overworked, unrealistic demands<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Mental State<\/td><td>Apathy, detachment, and zoning out<\/td><td>Exhaustion, anxiety, and cynicism<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Common Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emotional signs \u2013 irritability, low tolerance, low mood during work hours, sense of shame or guilt about feeling exhausted when there\u2019s so little to actually do.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cognitive signs \u2013 difficulty concentrating, procrastination, mental fog, and intrusive rumination regarding aspects of job security, self-worth or the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical signs \u2013 anxiety, sleep disturbance, fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Behavioral signs \u2013 withdrawal<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Causes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A mismatch between skills and role: overqualified or when responsibilities have been reduced over time due to restructuring, automation or organizational change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of meaningful feedback or recognition: disconnection from any visible outcome or purpose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organizational stagnation: a company with no clear path for growth, unclear expectations, or a culture where taking initiative is discouraged \u2014 can quietly produce boreout even in people who started their roles enthusiastic and engaged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of asking for more: employees feel stuck; fear of taking risks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to overcome boreout<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acceptance of the feeling. &nbsp;Create self-awareness and don\u2019t ignore it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seek new challenges: request new responsibilities, brainstorm, stretch projects with your manager\/co-workers. Bring concrete suggestions to managers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connect with colleagues: collaborate with peers. Seek mentorship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upskill during downtime: pursue professional development, learn new skills.
